Waste Gurus

Every Piece of Waste Is a Misplaced Resource.

Waste Gurus Inc. is a waste and energy infrastructure consultancy based in Edmonton, Alberta. We advise public authorities, Indigenous communities, and private industry on the selection of treatment technology for their waste streams — and, through our ventures, we develop that infrastructure ourselves.

We work as advisors, and through our ventures we also develop. The roles are never blurred: when we advise, we sit on your side of the table with no stake in which technology wins — and if an engagement grows into a development partnership, that happens openly, on your terms. Either way, the technology assessment is validated independently.

Samir Hamid

Chief Executive Officer

More than fifteen years in the waste sector. An original founder of Varme Energy, and an active advisor to the Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council. Over the last four years he has assessed more than twenty-five waste-to-energy facilities in operation across North America, the European Union, and China — spanning mass burn combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, biofuels, and carbon capture. He founded Waste Gurus to apply the appropriate technology to a given waste stream, rather than the reverse.

Where We've Been.

Our judgment comes from site work — what each technology does under real operating conditions, in real places.

Halos mark the regions of our 25+ facility assessments — the city-level list is being compiled for publication.

Working With Indigenous Communities

Waste infrastructure decisions land hardest on communities that carry the waste — and nowhere is the gap between estimates and measured reality wider than in remote and Indigenous communities. We work with First Nations and Métis communities as partners, not just clients: community-led priorities, measured evidence the community owns, and technology recommendations made to the community rather than around it.

Where a community wants equity participation in a project, today's funding landscape makes that real — including loan guarantees through the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation, which has backstopped more than $600 million of Indigenous ownership in energy and infrastructure projects, and the federal Indigenous loan guarantee program. We structure projects so that participation is on the table from the first conversation, not retrofitted at the end.

We Build What We Advise On.

Our advice is shaped by what we build ourselves — ventures applying the right technology to three very different waste streams.

Varme Energy
Varme EnergyDeveloping a waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage in Alberta's Industrial Heartland — designed to divert municipal and commercial residual waste from landfill while capturing the CO₂ produced in combustion for permanent geological storage. Among the first applications of carbon capture to municipal waste treatment in North America.
MAGNETIKSOLUTIONS
Magnetik SolutionsApplying near-zero-emission treatment to biomedical and healthcare waste — an area where conventional incineration carries both regulatory and public-acceptance difficulties.
Coming Soon
Coming SoonDeveloping pyrolysis capacity for end-of-life tires — a stream that is difficult to landfill, costly to store, and well suited to thermal conversion. Venture details to be announced.

Independent Technology Validation

Technology shortlists are validated by WtERT — the Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council, originating from the Earth Engineering Center at Columbia University — a network linking academic and industry research on thermal and biological waste treatment across more than twenty countries.

WtERT is retained on a fixed professional fee that is not contingent on which technology is selected, on a project proceeding, or on any facility reaching financial close. Where a client authority prefers, WtERT can be engaged directly or jointly by that authority, with the validation report addressed to it as client.

Representing Canada Abroad

Waste Gurus has represented Alberta and Canada on trade delegations and industry roadshows organised by both the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada, and holds an existing file with Export Development Canada, Canada's export credit agency. For international engagements, a Canadian sponsor can pursue federal co-financing channels — including facilities administered through the Asian Development Bank — that are not available to purely local or regional developers.
